On our first full day on Freyja there was little wind and we were motoring for most of the day. At least it kept all the batteries charged.

Our second night was spent in Cullie Voe in the North Eastern sector of Yell before heading for Muckle Flugga that most northerly point of Britain.

There was very little wind again on the second day when we rounded Muckle Flugga. We had hoped to visit Papa Stour on West tip of the Mainland but the forecast was winds from the north west up to 27 knots. We did not relish the thought of a beat back up the north west coast of the mainland with a full Atlantic swell so we sought the relative shelter of Yell Sound. Yell Houses the oil terminal that services the Brent Oil field although its life is coming to an end there is still a number of large vessels to be seen such as this tow minus and day signs.

After a night at Gluss Voe on the Mainland we set off for Burra Voe on the South eastern end on Yell in brisk north westerly 25 to 30 knots of wind. The main reason for going here was so that we could hook up to the Shorepower

In the event our cable was not long enough to reach the power socket. We were also concerned that there would not be enough water in the berth at the next low water. We checked the depth of water with a line and spanner and a peg (we found the lead line the day before we left the boat). We checked the off set of the keel reading and were happy that we would float in the middle of the night and went for a bracing walk around the head land after a quick dash to the shop that was only open between 2 pm and 3 pm. We explored the leading line into the mooring which involved a yellow ware house, a gable ended house and a two storey council house. All perfectly obvious when you see them land side.

Next stop Vidlin on the mainland for a more extensive shop and hook up to the power. It was on this leg while we were sailing that the the Chart plotter began to act up in the manner described by earlier crews. After 2 days of sailing and no shore power the batteries proved to sorely depleted. Another bracing walk almost as far as West Lunna Voe where the Shetland Bus first operated. This was the part of the Norweigen resistance movement that operated between Bergen and Shetland bringing refugees and other personnell to safety although it was later based at Scalloway. The phones also worked at the windiest part of the walk. The next day as the winds had abated we were off to the magical Out Skerries with the possibility of a helicopter lift on the way. This did not materailise and we can only assume the crew were busy else where.

The weather was kind to us when we visited the Out Skerries and a perfect place to explore by dinghy.

I will remember this when I am back at work.

On to an anchorage in Vassa Voe on the Mainland. An interesting place to navigate into with the Chart plotter showing us on land as Anne picked up a mooring buoy and the rock and a hard place we navigated through.

Friday28th May, the last day of sailing because the alternator had to be fitted on the Saturday. We headed for the bird sanctuary on the island of Noss which is just east of Bressay.

Lunch at an anchorage on Noss and then back to Lerwick passing the many Fulmar that abound on the cliffs of Bressay.

Work on the boat during the day. A meal with the in coming crew in the evening. The final day was spent sight seeing by some of us while we were waiting for our flights.
